Come come and join us for a Raqs Sharqi Workshop!
This 90 minute session, led by dance artist Yasmeen, will take us through the 101 of raqs sharqi. With roots in Egypt and across the broader MENAHT region, raqs sharqi, or bellydance, is a social dance practiced by all bodies and ages.
In this workshop, we will not only learn the basic movements of bellydance, but embrace this dance as a form of expression and connection. All you need is your sense of rhythm and an openness to connect with the music and your fellow dancers.
🌹 MEET THE DANCER 🌹
Yasmeen is Arab Hispanic American and grew up loving raqs sharqi, or bellydance. After finding Phaedra Darwish’s classes and deciding to study raqs sharqi formally in 2021, she quickly became dedicated to honoring this art and professionally reclaiming SWANA dance. She values joy and authenticity and hopes to bring that to every performance.
Doors open at 6:45 and we will begin promptly at 7:00pm.
Lite refreshments provided.
FAQ
Q: What should we wear?
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and that shows your hips — leggings with a tank top works well. You're welcome to wear something more flowy if it’s paired with a hip scarf (spare hip scarves will be provided). We will dance barefoot. (You’re welcome to wear grippy socks instead.)
Q: Do I need previous dance experience?
Not at all! This workshop will be taught at a beginner level.
Q: I’m not from the cultures this dance comes from. Can I still participate?
Yes — especially if you’re coming with a commitment to honoring the roots of the dance. This workshop will include cultural education and building cultural awareness.
